Leading North West house builder Wainhomes, welcomed year 5 pupils from nearby Cottam Primary School onto their Paddocks new homes development at Higher Bartle, in a bid to highlight the dangers associated with playing in and around building sites.
The visit was arranged and presented by Construction Director Martin Stott, who was ably assisted by other members of the Wainhomes team; and accompanying the school children was headteacher Lindsay Timms along with members of her teaching staff.
After a short presentation in the Sales Centre by Martin outlining the building process and the dangers found on building sites, the children were kitted out in fluorescent jackets, safety helmets and protective footwear, and given a tour of the site. They were given the opportunity to ask questions, whilst being taught about the risks regarding heavy machinery, falling objects and hazardous materials. Under the supervision of experienced Wainhomes bricklayers, they then ‘laid some bricks’ back in the compound.
Returning to the Sales Centre the children enjoyed some welcome refreshments and a final recap before being presented with goodie bags to take back to school, where they were keen to join the dots and get creative with colour in a competition arranged by Martin to win a £20 gift voucher.
Martin said: “It is extremely important for us to promote site safety as many of our developments have schools nearby. We are aware that some youngsters might be tempted to try to gain access to sites. We want to urge the children to keep safe and organising these visits are the perfect way to do so. But we are always keen to stress that construction workers are well trained and wear specialist protective clothing to keep them safe.”
Site Manager Dave Brown, winner of two NHBC Safety awards and a ‘Pride in the Job’ quality award commented: “Visits like these are so important in helping to drive home the importance of site safety and it was great to see the young children so enthusiastic. They were delighted at the opportunity to get a closer look at the building site and learn the site safety rules. Hopefully the safety messages will have a lasting effect on the pupils at the school.”
Headteacher Lindsay Timms, said: “I am extremely grateful to Wainhomes for taking time out of their busy schedule to conduct this visit for us to The Paddocks. The children were really captivated by the presentation, which gave them a lot to think about. Enjoyable activities like these really help to cement important messages in young people’s minds.”
The Paddocks development offers a wide variety of new 3, 4 & 5 bedroom family homes in Higher Bartle.
Further visits will be repeated periodically where schools are situated close to Wainhomes developments.
